Decide whether an item is worth selling at all
A quick rule: if you would not spend an hour photographing, listing, answering messages and meeting a buyer for what the item will bring, donate it instead. Most household goods fall into that group. Brand-name furniture, designer accessories, quality outdoor sets, exercise equipment and collectibles are the usual exceptions.
Be realistic about resale value. Used furniture and decor typically sell for a fraction of their original cost, and the market sets the price, not the receipt.
Three ways to sell, compared
Each route trades effort for return in a different way. Pick one per category rather than trying all three for everything.
| Option | Good for | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Consignment shop | Designer clothing, handbags, jewelry, higher-end furniture and decor | The shop handles the sale and takes a share; many have seasonal intake rules and may decline items |
| Online marketplace | Everyday furniture, appliances, baby and kids' gear, tools, fitness equipment | Most work and most control; you photograph, price, message and arrange pickup |
| Estate sale company | Clearing most of a home during a downsize, relocation or after a loss | The company prices and runs the sale on site; ask how they handle what remains afterward |
List it so it sells the first week
Buyers scroll fast, so the listing has to answer their questions before they ask. Daylight photos, dimensions and an honest note about wear do more than a clever description.
Las Vegas sunlight is an advantage here. Shoot near a window in the morning, when the light is bright but not harsh, and avoid flash, which flattens wood grain and fabric texture.
- Measure height, width and depth and put them in the first line
- Show any scratches or fading in a close-up photo
- Price a little above your floor so you have room to accept an offer
- State pickup terms clearly, including whether the buyer needs to bring help

Handle pickups safely and in the right season
Meet buyers in a public place for small items, or stage larger pieces in the garage or driveway so strangers do not walk through your home. Have someone else around during pickup.
In summer, schedule pickups for early morning or evening. Moving a dresser across a driveway at 4 p.m. in July is hard on everyone, and wood and leather should not sit outside in direct sun while you wait for a late buyer.
Set a sell-by date and stick to it
The biggest risk with selling is that items linger in a corner for months while you wait for the right offer. Give each item two to three weeks. If it has not sold, drop the price once, then donate it.
