The top of the island is a work surface
A closet island is most useful when the countertop stays mostly empty. It is where you fold laundry, lay out tomorrow's outfit, pack a suitcase or set down a handbag while you switch contents. Once it fills with decorative objects and stray clothes, it loses that job.
Limit the top to one or two items: a tray for the jewelry you wear daily, or a small lamp or vase. A low, lidded valet box can hold rings and watches overnight without cluttering the surface.
Map every drawer before you fill it
Islands usually have a column of shallow drawers, two to four inches deep, and a few deeper drawers below. Measure each one inside, then decide what it holds. Writing a quick drawer map before you start prevents the classic island problem: one junk drawer on top of a beautiful piece of furniture.
Put what you reach for daily in the top drawer on the side you approach from. Things you use weekly go lower. Items you use a few times a year can live in the bottom drawers or on the closet's upper shelves.
| Drawer | Typical depth | Good contents |
|---|---|---|
| Top shallow | 2 to 3 in | Everyday jewelry, watches, sunglasses |
| Second shallow | 2 to 4 in | Belts rolled in grids, cufflinks, hair accessories |
| Middle | 5 to 7 in | Lingerie, socks, tights, small clutches |
| Deep bottom | 8 to 12 in | Folded sweaters, workout gear, travel pouches |
Step by step
- Empty and measure
Take everything out and measure each drawer's inside width, depth and height.
- Sort small items
Group jewelry, watches, sunglasses, belts and lingerie into categories.
- Write a drawer map
Assign each category a drawer, most-used on top.
- Fit inserts
Add trays and dividers sized to each drawer, then load it.
- Clear the top
Leave the countertop open except for one tray or decorative piece.
Use inserts sized to the drawer
The right insert is what makes a drawer stay organized. Velvet or felt trays with small compartments stop jewelry from tangling and scratching. Ring rolls, earring grids and watch pillows let you see everything at once.
For deeper drawers, adjustable dividers or open-top bins keep folded clothes in tidy rows. Fold knits and tees vertically so you can see each one from above instead of digging through a stack. Our jewelry and accessory organization service plans these inserts in detail for larger collections.
- Velvet trays with removable compartments for jewelry
- Watch pillows or a slim watch tray
- Honeycomb dividers for socks, tights and rolled belts
- Adjustable spring dividers in deep drawers
- Non-slip drawer liner under anything that slides

Keep fine jewelry protected
Islands are convenient for fine jewelry, but convenience and security pull in opposite directions. Many households keep everyday pieces in the island and store heirlooms and high-value items in a safe or a locking drawer insert.
Silver tarnishes faster when it is exposed to air, so anti-tarnish strips or lined pouches help. Desert dust also settles in open trays, so a drawer with a good seal is worth more than an open display.
Work with your closet company on the details
If you are building or remodeling, involve an organizer early. Knowing how many rings, watches and pairs of sunglasses you own helps a closet company size drawer heights and choose built-in inserts. We do not build islands, but we often coordinate the inventory and layout with the people who do; see our custom closet organizer page.
