Work backward from the date
Holiday prep goes smoothly when it follows a timeline instead of a final weekend sprint. Use the table to spread the work.
| When | Focus |
|---|---|
| 4 weeks out | Declutter entry, living areas and guest rooms |
| 3 weeks out | Set up guest rooms, check linens and towels |
| 2 weeks out | Edit fridge, pantry and freezer; gather serveware |
| 1 week out | Decorate, plan seating, set up drink station |
| Day before | Final reset, clear counters, prep coat and bag area |
Clear the entry and coat closet
The entry is the first thing guests see and where coats, bags and shoes land. Clear the coat closet of off-season gear, add empty hangers, and set a basket for small items like scarves and sunglasses.
Las Vegas winters are mild, but evenings can be cool, and visitors from colder places arrive with heavy coats. Having space ready makes arrivals calm. If you expect a crowd, a rolling garment rack in a guest room handles overflow, and a bench or shoe tray by the door helps in homes where guests take shoes off.
Set up guest rooms and casitas
Overnight guests need an empty drawer, closet space, fresh linens and a few comforts. Move your stored items out of sight and stock a basket with toiletries, a charger and water.
Many valley homes have a casita or next-gen suite. If yours sat closed over summer, check it for dust and heat-damaged supplies. The guest room guide and the casita guide cover setup in detail.

Make room in the kitchen
Holiday meals need fridge and counter space. Two weeks out, clear expired food, use up freezer items and wipe shelves. Plan a spot for drinks outside the main fridge, like a beverage fridge or a cooler, so the main fridge holds the meal.
Pull serveware, platters and table linens forward. Check that everything is clean and that you have enough for the guest count, then group them on one shelf so you are not searching on the day.
- Clear fridge shelves for the meal
- Set a drink station away from the cooking zone
- Gather serveware, platters and table linens
- Clear counters for prep and plating
Bring decor out cleanly and put it back better
Bring decorations down from storage and check what survived the summer. Candles, ornaments with glue and anything with batteries may have suffered in a hot garage; the guide on storing holiday decorations in a hot garage explains what to move indoors.
When the season ends, pack decor by room and label each bin clearly. Next year's prep starts with a much easier unpacking.
