Choose one main job for the space
A casita works when it has one primary purpose. A detached casita or next-gen suite is common in newer Las Vegas and Henderson homes, and it gets pulled in many directions: guest room, gym, storage and home office all at once. Every extra job takes space from the main one.
Pick the purpose that happens most often in your household, then allow one quiet secondary use that does not conflict, such as stored luggage behind the closet doors.
| Main job | Organize for | Leave out |
|---|---|---|
| Short guest stays | Hotel-style basics, empty drawers | Your own daily-use items |
| Parent or adult child | Full closet, real kitchen storage, personal decor | Household overflow |
| Home office | Desk zone, file storage, video-call backdrop | Exercise gear and guest bedding |
| Pool or hobby room | Towels, sunscreen, hobby supplies | Anything that cannot get damp |
Stock it so nobody walks to the main house
Self-sufficiency is what makes a casita feel like its own place. A guest who has to cross the yard for a towel or a mug will not feel at home.
Keep a complete, small set of everything in labeled bins or drawers: two sets of sheets per bed, towels for each guest, a starter toiletry basket, four place settings, a coffee setup and a small cleaning caddy. The casita and guest suite service covers what we usually stock.
Organize the kitchenette in thirds
Small kitchenettes run smoothly when you split them into prep, serve and store. Put cutting board, knife and a pan near the cooktop; plates, mugs and glasses near the sink; and snacks and coffee in one labeled bin in the cabinet.
If the casita hosts a family member long term, give them full say over the kitchenette layout. It is their kitchen, and they will use it daily.

Protect a closed-up casita from heat and dust
A casita that sits empty through summer can get very warm, and fine desert dust settles on every open surface. Store bedding, towels and toiletries in lidded bins, and keep candles, photos and any medication in the main house rather than the casita between visits.
Before a fall guest season, plan a reset: wash the linens, wipe the shelves, replace anything that melted or dried out and restock the basket. Treat it like the first day of a hotel season.
Keep the overflow out
The biggest risk to a casita is that it becomes the house's storage unit. Boxes from the move, seasonal decor and furniture you might use someday migrate there and stay.
Give those items a real plan instead, whether that is garage shelving, donation or a sale. A casita full of boxes is a guest suite you paid for and cannot use.
