Choose a palette before you choose pieces
A capsule works because everything mixes. That starts with color. Pick two or three base neutrals, such as navy, white and camel, and two accent colors you love wearing. Every piece in the capsule should fit that palette.
Desert light is bright and warm, so many people here lean toward crisp whites, sand, olive and soft blues for the warm months, with deeper tones like charcoal and burgundy for winter.
Build the capsule from what you already own
You rarely need to shop to start a capsule. Pull your favorite, most-worn pieces in your palette and see what you have. Most people already own 80 percent of a good capsule, scattered among clothes they never wear.
Fill gaps slowly and only with pieces that combine with at least three others. Write a short gap list and keep it on your phone so you shop deliberately.
| Category | Typical count |
|---|---|
| Tops and blouses | 10 to 14 |
| Bottoms (trousers, jeans, skirts) | 6 to 8 |
| Dresses or jumpsuits | 2 to 4 |
| Layers (cardigans, blazers, jackets) | 3 to 5 |
| Shoes | 5 to 7 pairs |
Step by step
- Pick your palette
Choose two or three neutrals and two accent colors.
- Pull your favorites
Gather the most-worn pieces in that palette from your current closet.
- Count and trim
Aim for 30 to 40 items including shoes, trimming duplicates.
- Store the rest
Box everything outside the capsule and move it out of the main closet.
- Hang and test
Arrange the capsule with space between pieces, then track wear for a month.
Lay out the closet so outfits are obvious
A capsule closet should look a little empty. Leave space between hangers so each piece is visible. Hang tops on the left, bottoms on the right, with layers in between, all in the same color order. When you look in, you should see outfits, not inventory.
Fold knits and tees on one open shelf in a single row, not stacked high. Keep shoes on one shelf at eye level or just below, toes out. Accessories that complete outfits, like belts and scarves, can sit in a single shallow tray.
- Use one hanger style so the capsule reads as a set
- Leave a finger's width between hangers
- Keep a hook for tomorrow's outfit near the door
- Store everything outside the capsule in a separate closet or labeled bins

Rotate on the desert calendar
Las Vegas has a long hot season and a short mild winter, so two capsules usually beat four. A warm capsule from about April to October leans on breathable cotton, linen and light layers for air-conditioned spaces. A cool capsule from November to March adds knits, a coat and closed shoes.
Store the resting capsule indoors in breathable bins. Our seasonal closet swap guide covers timing and storage for each switch.
Track what you actually wear
For the first month, turn each hanger backward in the closet when you wear the piece. After four weeks, anything still facing forward is not earning its place. Swap it for something from storage, or let it go.
This simple test turns a capsule from a rule into a reflection of your real life. If you want help editing the rest of the closet down, our closet declutter guide walks through it.
