Always clean before storing
Invisible spots from champagne, perfume, sweat or makeup oxidize over time and turn into yellow or brown stains that are much harder to remove later. Have formalwear cleaned soon after the event by a cleaner experienced with delicate fabrics.
Remove the dry cleaner's plastic as soon as you get home. It traps moisture and fumes and can discolor fabric. Replace it with a breathable cotton or fabric garment bag.
Hang or fold: let the fabric decide
Not every gown should hang. Weight pulls on the shoulders and seams, and heavy beading can stretch a gown out of shape over months. The rule: if a garment is heavy, beaded, bias-cut or knit, store it flat. If it is light and structured, hang it.
When you hang, use padded hangers and tie the inner ribbon loops over the hook so the waistband carries the weight. Give gowns enough rod height, usually a long-hang section around 66 to 70 inches, so hems do not bunch on the floor.
| Garment | Best storage |
|---|---|
| Tuxedos and dinner jackets | Contoured wood hanger, breathable bag |
| Light chiffon or silk gowns | Padded hanger with loops, long garment bag |
| Heavily beaded or sequined gowns | Flat in an acid-free box, tissue between folds |
| Bias-cut or knit gowns | Flat, to prevent stretching |
| Wedding gowns for long-term keeping | Professionally cleaned and boxed archivally |
Heat and light do the most damage
In Las Vegas, the biggest risks to formalwear are heat and sun. Garages and attics reach temperatures that can melt adhesive on embellishments, yellow silk and weaken elastic. Formalwear should always live inside the air-conditioned home.
Direct sun from a closet window can fade a colored gown in one summer. Store gowns on a wall away from windows, or in a closet with the blinds kept closed. An interior hall or guest closet is often better than the main walk-in for long-term pieces.

Pack flat pieces properly
Folding a gown flat is not the same as tossing it in a box. Use an acid-free archival box large enough to hold the gown with few folds. Pad each fold with rolled acid-free tissue so it does not crease sharply, and place tissue between beaded layers so beads do not snag each other.
Label the box with what is inside and when it was cleaned. Store it on a shelf, never on the floor, and check it once a year.
- Acid-free archival box, not a regular cardboard box
- Unbuffered tissue for silk and protein fibers, buffered for cotton and linen
- Cotton gloves to handle light fabrics
- A card listing contents, date cleaned and event
Give event wear its own zone
Las Vegas social calendars include galas, weddings and holiday parties, so formalwear often gets used more than people expect. Grouping it in one section, with shoes, clutches and wraps nearby, makes getting ready far easier.
If your walk-in closet is short on long-hang space, a guest-room or casita closet can work as a dedicated formalwear closet. Our luxury closet organization page describes how we plan event zones.
