Use the new home as your filter
The most useful question is not whether something is still good, but whether it has a place in the house you are moving into. Get the floor plan, closet sizes and garage layout of the new home if you can, and edit against them.
A sectional that will not fit the new living room, a dining table too big for the space or a second guest bed with no guest room are all decisions you can make before paying to move them.
Room by room: the usual suspects
Every household is different, but these are the categories professional organizers see most often as moving clutter.
| Room | Common things to let go |
|---|---|
| Garage | Old paint, broken tools, unused sports gear, empty boxes |
| Closets | Clothes that do not fit, worn shoes, extra hangers |
| Kitchen | Duplicate gadgets, mismatched containers, expired food |
| Bathrooms | Expired medications and cosmetics, old towels |
| Kids' rooms | Outgrown clothes and toys, broken crayons and puzzles |
| Office | Old papers, dead electronics, tangled cords |
| Linen closet | Sheets for beds you no longer own, stained linens |
Step by step
- Six to eight weeks out
Edit the garage, attic and storage closets, where the least-used items hide.
- Four to six weeks out
Go through clothing closets, kids' rooms and the linen closet.
- Two to four weeks out
Edit the office, paperwork and bookshelves. Sell larger items now so buyers have time to collect.
- Final two weeks
Eat down the pantry, edit the bathroom and kitchen, and make your last donation run.
Moving to or within Las Vegas changes some decisions
If you are relocating from a colder climate, heavy winter coats, snow boots and shovels are rarely needed here, so keep only a few layers. If you are moving from an older home to a new-construction house, you may gain a bigger garage but lose basement or attic storage, which changes what is worth keeping.
Moving within the valley in summer has its own logic: the fewer heat-sensitive boxes you have, the easier the day. Our moving to Las Vegas checklist covers relocation timing in more detail.

Plan where each item goes before the move
Decluttering stalls when bags of donations sit in the hallway for weeks. Pick your outlets in advance and schedule drop-offs before moving day, not after.
Donation options in the valley include Goodwill of Southern Nevada, Opportunity Village and Habitat for Humanity Las Vegas ReStore for furniture and building materials; check each organization's current list of accepted items before you load the car. Our guide on where to donate household items in Las Vegas has more.
- Donate: clean, working items someone else can use
- Sell: higher-value furniture, décor and electronics
- Recycle: electronics and cardboard through proper channels
- Discard: broken, stained or expired items
