Two to three months out: decide what is worth bringing
Moving costs and unpacking time both scale with how much you bring, so the editing stage pays off twice. Many people relocating from California or other states move from an older home into a newer Las Vegas Valley house with different storage, so measure what you can before deciding on bulky furniture.
Winter wardrobes are a common place to cut back. Las Vegas winters are short and mild compared with much of the country, so most households need a few warm layers rather than a closet of heavy coats. Our guide to what to declutter before moving goes room by room.
- Get the new home's floor plan and closet dimensions
- Edit heavy winter clothing and snow gear
- Decide on furniture that suits the new rooms
- Book movers and confirm dates, especially in summer
- Schedule packing help if you want it
One month out: plan for the heat
If your move falls between roughly May and September, temperatures can make loading, unloading and storing belongings harder. Morning move windows are popular for that reason, so book early.
Some belongings should travel with you in an air-conditioned car rather than in a truck: candles, wine, photographs, important documents, medications, electronics, artwork and cosmetics. The same items should not be stored in the garage once you arrive. Our summer moving guide for Las Vegas covers this in detail.
The week of the move: pack the essentials and prepare the house
Pack an essentials box for each person with clothes, medications, chargers and toiletries, plus a household kit with basic kitchen items, cleaning supplies and toilet paper. Add sunscreen and refillable water bottles for a desert move day.
If possible, visit the new home before the truck arrives. Wipe shelves and cabinets, since new-construction and vacant homes tend to collect a layer of fine dust, and set the thermostat so the house is cool when movers start bringing boxes in.

The first month: set up systems for desert living
Once you are in, the way you set up storage matters more here than in milder climates. Plan a garage that holds only heat-tolerant items, use lidded bins on open shelving, and keep pantry food indoors.
Mild winters mean a lighter seasonal wardrobe swap, often just moving sweaters and jackets to and from a top shelf. Many Las Vegas homes also include a casita or next-gen suite worth setting up as a guest space, office or gym from the start.
| Space | Desert-smart setup |
|---|---|
| Garage | Heat-tolerant items only, sealed bins, organize it in cooler months |
| Pantry | Everything indoors, airtight containers |
| Closets | Light seasonal rotation, sun protection for window-facing closets |
| Entry | Mat and drop zone to keep dust and sand outside |
