Before the first box opens: prep the house
Ten minutes of prep saves hours later. Wipe shelves and drawers before anything goes in, because new and newly vacant Las Vegas homes collect a film of fine dust, and lining up shelf liners is far easier in an empty cabinet.
Set up a box-breakdown station in the garage with a box cutter, a trash bag and a spot for flattened cardboard. Check that the air conditioning is set comfortably if you are moving in summer; unpacking in a warm house drains energy fast.
- Wipe shelves, drawers and closet rods
- Confirm utilities, internet and AC are running
- Place shelf and drawer liners in the kitchen and bathrooms
- Stage a box-cutter, trash and recycling station
Day one: sleep, wash, eat and find the essentials
The first day is about getting through the night comfortably, not about finishing a room. Assemble every bed and put sheets on them before dinner, set up one fully stocked bathroom, and unpack enough of the kitchen for coffee, breakfast and a simple meal.
Pull out medications, phone chargers, important documents and pet supplies and give them a single, obvious home. If you packed an essentials box, as described in our moving day essentials box guide, this step takes minutes.
Week one: the kitchen, closets and kids' rooms
These three areas affect daily life the most, so they come next. Finish the kitchen first, since takeout fatigue sets in quickly, then hang clothes and fill dressers so mornings run normally.
Children settle faster when their room looks like theirs, so prioritize familiar bedding, favorite toys and a nightlight. Our step-by-step kitchen unpacking guide shows how to set up zones rather than filling cabinets at random.

| Room | Week-one goal | Done when |
|---|---|---|
| Kitchen | Every box unpacked into zones | You can cook a full meal |
| Primary closet | Hanging clothes and daily drawers | You dress without a box |
| Kids' rooms | Beds, clothes, favorite toys | Bedtime routine works |
| Bathrooms | Toiletries, towels, cleaning basics | Everyone gets ready easily |
Month one: living areas, office, décor and garage
Once daily routines work, move on to the living room, home office, linen closet and laundry room, then art and décor. Live in the space for a week or two before hanging artwork, since your furniture layout may shift.
The garage is usually last, which is fine. If you moved in summer, waiting for cooler weather from mid-October onward makes garage work far more pleasant and lets you avoid storing heat-sensitive items there in the meantime.
When a checklist is not enough
Some moves come with too many boxes and too little time, especially relocations with work starting right away or homes with young children. In those cases, a team that unpacks and organizes at the same time gets you settled in days instead of months.
Sorted Spaces unpacks, sets up kitchens, closets and bathrooms, and removes packing materials as they go, while your movers handle transport. See how it works on our unpacking services in Las Vegas page.
