How to Unpack a Kitchen

Unpacking a kitchen after a move? Wipe and map the cabinets first, set up a daily-use zone by the sink and stove, and save the specialty gear for last.

Three organizers working in a white kitchen

Unpack a kitchen by first wiping every cabinet and drawer, then deciding which cabinet holds each category before you open a single box. Set up the everyday zone first, meaning dishes, glasses, utensils, a few pans and coffee, close to the sink, dishwasher and stove. Then add pantry food, small appliances, and finally entertaining and specialty items in the harder-to-reach spots.

Map the cabinets before you unwrap anything

The fastest way to unpack a kitchen twice is to put things wherever there is room. Take ten minutes to open every cabinet and assign it a job, and stick a note on the door if it helps.

Think in terms of where you stand. Dishes and glasses belong near the dishwasher, pots and cooking utensils by the stove, food storage containers near the counter where you pack lunches, and knives near the main prep area.

Clean shelves and add liners first

Even a freshly cleaned home in the Las Vegas Valley gathers fine dust in empty cabinets, and new construction usually has drywall dust inside drawers. Wipe every surface before items go in.

Shelf liners protect against scratches and make future cleaning easier. This is also the moment to add drawer dividers or a cabinet riser, while the space is empty.

Unpack one box completely before opening the next

Opening ten boxes at once spreads packing paper across every counter and makes it hard to see what you have. Work one box at a time, put everything away, flatten the box and remove the paper right away.

Keep one counter clear as a landing zone. As you unwrap, you will spot duplicates and gadgets you no longer need, so keep a donation box nearby rather than finding them a cabinet.

Respect the heat when deciding what goes where

Cabinets right beside the oven or above the refrigerator run warm, so avoid them for oils, spices, chocolate and wine. In a Las Vegas home, keep heat-sensitive pantry goods in the coolest part of the kitchen, and never move food overflow into the garage.

Live with it for a week, then adjust

After a few days of cooking, you will notice the cabinet you keep reaching past or the drawer you always open by mistake. Swap those categories now, before habits form.

Once the layout feels right, label pantry bins and add the finishing touches. Our guide to organizing a kitchen in a new home goes deeper on long-term systems.

Questions

How to Unpack a Kitchen: common questions

Something else on your mind? Call (510) 283-8468 or book a free consultation.

How long does it take to unpack a kitchen?

A typical kitchen takes most people a full day or more on their own, and longer with a large pantry or many entertaining pieces. Having the cabinet map ready in advance shortens it a great deal.

Should I wash dishes before putting them away?

If they were wrapped in clean packing paper, a quick rinse or a dishwasher cycle is usually enough. Anything wrapped in newspaper or stored in a dusty garage should be washed before use.

What should go in the corner cabinet?

Corner cabinets suit bulky, rarely used items such as large serving bowls, a slow cooker or holiday platters. A turntable or pull-out insert makes the back of the space usable.
