Think of it as the box that buys you a calm first night
Moving trucks often arrive late, and unloading can run into the evening. The essentials box means you can still brush your teeth, make the beds and find your phone charger even if every other box is stacked in the garage.
Most households do best with one essentials box per person plus a shared household box. Kids especially settle better when their own familiar things are within reach.
The shared household box: tools, kitchen and bathroom basics
This is the box that gets the house functioning. Keep it practical and resist adding nice-to-haves that make it too heavy to carry yourself.
- Box cutter, scissors, a screwdriver set and a small hammer
- Toilet paper, hand soap, paper towels and a shower curtain with rings
- Two or three plates, cups, utensils, a pan and a sharp knife
- Trash bags, a few cleaning wipes and a basic all-purpose cleaner
- Coffee, bottled water and easy snacks
- Light bulbs, a flashlight and a power strip
- Pet food, bowls and a leash if you have animals
Each personal box covers sleep, clothing and medication
Pack a set of sheets and a pillow for every bed, pajamas, two days of clothes and a toiletry bag. Add any prescription or daily medications in their original bottles, glasses or contacts, and the chargers for each person's devices.
Important documents travel here too: passports, the lease or closing paperwork, and anything you need for school enrollment or utilities. Keep these in a folder you can see at a glance.

In Las Vegas, plan for heat, dust and a garage that bakes
A summer move here means hydration is part of the plan. Freeze a few water bottles the night before, pack electrolyte drinks and sunscreen, and keep a cooler in the car for anything that should not sit in a hot trunk.
Fine desert dust settles quickly in an empty house, especially in new construction. A few microfiber cloths and a hand vacuum make it easy to wipe down counters and shelves before the first items go in. If you are moving in the hottest months, the guide to a summer move in Las Vegas has more on timing the day.
Label it, isolate it and keep it with you
Use a clear plastic bin or a box in a different color so nobody mistakes it for an ordinary carton. Mark it OPEN FIRST on every side and load it into your own car, not the truck.
Once the essentials are out, the next priority is a working kitchen and made beds. Our post on what to unpack first after a move lays out the order that keeps the first week manageable.
