Most California moves land in more space, and that changes the plan
Many people relocating from the Bay Area, Los Angeles, Orange County or San Diego trade a compact home for more square footage, a bigger kitchen and a two- or three-car garage. Extra room is the goal, but it also means your belongings no longer fit the patterns you built around tight storage.
Instead of spreading things into every new cabinet, we plan each space for what you actually own. A pantry that was a single cupboard in Oakland might become a walk-in in Henderson, and that walk-in works far better with zones than with everything pushed onto the first shelf.
Desert living asks for a few different storage habits
The coastal climate many Californians leave behind is forgiving about where things are stored; the Mojave is not. Summer days here regularly pass 110°F and a closed garage gets hotter still, so the overflow habits that worked in a mild garage in San Jose can ruin wine, candles, photos, electronics, paint and canned food in Las Vegas.
We help you sort what must stay inside the conditioned house and what can live in the garage. Our guide to what not to store in a Las Vegas garage covers the list in full.
- Heavy coats and rain gear: fewer needed, so they move to a high shelf or a donation bag
- Beach and surf gear: often swapped for pool, hiking or golf equipment
- Wine and collectibles: kept indoors, away from exterior walls that heat up
- Linens and seasonal items: in lidded bins, because fine desert dust settles everywhere
- Garage projects: scheduled mid-October through April, when the heat allows real work
Packing on the California side, unpacking on the Nevada side
Our team is based in Henderson, so we do our best work on arrival: the unpacking, organizing and setup in your new Las Vegas Valley home. For the California end, your moving company or a local packer handles packing and transport. Clear room labels on every box make our side faster, and the moving to Las Vegas checklist has a section on labeling before you leave.
Out-of-state movers often deliver within a window rather than on a set day. We plan your unpacking sessions once the delivery is confirmed and can begin with the rooms you need first: kitchen, beds, bathrooms and anything the kids need for school.

A California move is a good time to let some things go
The cheapest box to move is the one you never pack. If you are still sorting before the truck comes, decide on obvious duplicates, outgrown kids' gear and clothes for weather you will rarely see. If you arrive with more than you want to keep, we can help you work through it during unpacking.
You make every keep, donate or sell decision. Up to a carload of what you release can leave with us after an unpacking session, and options around the valley include Goodwill of Southern Nevada, Opportunity Village and the Habitat for Humanity Las Vegas ReStore. More in our guide on where to donate household items in Las Vegas.
Cost of unpacking and organizing after a cross-state move
Unpacking and organizing projects start around $600 with a four-hour minimum. A full house arriving from California usually takes one or more full days with a team, and a typical full-day unpacking project starts around $1,800. Counting packing and unpacking together, full-home projects average around one to three weeks.
The total depends on the size of the home, the number of boxes, how much editing happens as we unpack and whether you need organizing products. We give you a recommended plan, team size and time estimate after a free consultation, and our unpacking services page explains the work in detail.
