Desk drawer with stationery in clear organizers

To organize a desk, keep only what you use every day on the surface, give each drawer one job, and hide cords under the desk in a tray. Use a single inbox for loose paper and empty it weekly. A desk that's clear at the end of each day is easier to sit down at the next morning.

The surface: five things or fewer

A desktop works best with a short, fixed list of residents. For most people that is the computer, a lamp, one notebook, a cup of pens and an inbox tray. Everything else goes into a drawer or onto a shelf.

Picture frames and plants are welcome if you have room, but set a limit. Each extra object is something to move when you need space to spread out a project.

Give every drawer one clear job

Desk drawers turn into junk drawers when they hold a bit of everything. Assign each a category and stick to it, using shallow trays to subdivide.

The top drawer, closest to your hands, is for tools you reach for several times a day. Lower or deeper drawers hold supplies and hanging files. If your desk has only one drawer, make it the tools drawer and move supplies to a bin on a nearby shelf. The method is similar to sorting a junk drawer: empty, group, divide, return.

  • Top drawer: pens, sticky notes, scissors, tape, a ruler, earbuds
  • Middle drawer: notebooks, envelopes, stamps, a charging cable or two
  • File drawer: active files only, in labeled hanging folders
  • Shelf bin: printer paper, refills, and anything stocked in bulk

Step by step

  1. Clear the top

Move everything off the surface onto a nearby table or the floor.

  2. Empty each drawer

Sort contents into keep, relocate, and toss, then wipe out the drawers.

  3. Run the cords

Install the cable tray and route power before anything goes back.

  4. Assign and divide

Give each drawer its job and fit shallow dividers to the contents.

  5. Set the surface

Return only your five daily items, then add the inbox tray.

  6. Schedule the weekly empty

Put a recurring reminder on your calendar to clear the inbox.

One inbox, emptied on a schedule

Loose paper spreads across a desk because it has no single landing spot. A single tray or upright holder catches mail, receipts and printouts as they arrive.

Pick a day each week to empty it: act on what needs action, file what you'll keep, and shred the rest. Without that weekly appointment, the inbox becomes a pile with walls.

Hide the cords before you set anything down

Cable management is easiest while the desk is empty. Mount a cable tray or basket under the desk for the power strip and chargers, then clip cords along a leg to the outlet.

Label plugs at the power strip with a small tag so you know which one to pull. Spare cables and adapters go into one labeled bin; our cords and chargers guide covers how to sort that tangle.

Las Vegas details: sun, dust and kid desks

A desk pushed against a sunny window in the valley gets hot fast in summer. Strong afternoon sun can fade papers, warm a laptop and soften adhesive notes, so angle the desk or keep a shade down on hot afternoons.

Dust settles quickly on keyboards and open pen cups here; a lidded pen holder and a weekly wipe help. For children's homework desks, keep supplies in a rolling cart that can tuck away, so the desk itself stays clear for work.

Questions

How to Organize a Desk: common questions

Something else on your mind? Call (510) 283-8468 or book a free consultation.

How do I organize a desk with no drawers?

Add a small rolling drawer unit beneath or beside it, and use a monitor riser with a shelf to store a notebook and pens. Wall-mounted pegboard or rails above the desk keep tools off the work surface.

What should a standing desk hold?

Even less than a regular desk, because you'll raise and lower it. Keep the surface to the computer and a notebook, mount a cable tray that moves with the desk, and store supplies on a separate cart.

How do I keep a desk from getting cluttered again?

Do a two-minute reset before you stop each day: return tools, file or inbox loose papers, and leave only the daily five on top.

Can a professional organize my whole office?

Yes. A desk is often where we start in a home office organization project, before tackling files, shelves and supply storage.
