Set up the three breakroom zones
Breakrooms work best when each activity has its own spot. The coffee zone holds the machine, mugs, filters, sugar and stirrers. The snack and dish zone holds plates, utensils and shared food. The cleanup zone holds soap, sponges, paper towels and trash and recycling.
Placing zones in order, from coffee to snacks to cleanup, keeps people from crowding at the same counter. If the room is narrow, put the coffee station farthest from the door so the morning line does not block people coming in for the fridge or sink.
| Zone | Contents |
|---|---|
| Coffee and drinks | Machine, mugs, pods, sugar, stirrers, tea |
| Snacks and dishes | Plates, utensils, napkins, shared snacks |
| Cleanup | Dish soap, sponges, paper towels, trash, recycling |
| Fridge | Labeled shelves, condiments, shared drinks |
Make the fridge policy simple
The fridge is where breakrooms usually fall apart. Post a short policy: label food with name and date, take leftovers home by Friday and everything unlabeled is cleared on clean-out day.
Assign shelves for personal food, shared items and drinks. Clear bins help keep shelves tidy. A lidded bin for each team or department works well in larger offices, since people can see at once which shelf is theirs and spills stay contained. The refrigerator organizing guide has more ideas.
Label and stock with par levels
Labels on cabinets and bins help everyone find and put back supplies. Set par levels for coffee, paper goods and cleaning supplies so they do not run out.
Keep backstock in a separate cabinet or supply closet, and refill the breakroom from it. The par levels guide explains how to set them.
- Coffee and filters
- Cups, plates and utensils
- Paper towels and napkins
- Dish soap and sponges
- Trash and recycling bags

Plan for Las Vegas heat and dust
Snacks like chocolate and anything with oils can soften or go stale quickly in warm spots. Keep them away from windows and the top of the fridge. In summer, cold water and drinks run out faster, so raise par levels for those.
Fine dust settles on open shelves, so keep cups and dishes in closed cabinets or upside down on a tray. Wipe counters as part of the daily reset. A covered mug rack or a cabinet with doors keeps the morning coffee cups dust-free during the windy spring months.
Share the reset with a rotation
A rotation keeps the breakroom clean without burdening one person. Assign a person or team each week to handle the daily wipe-down, the fridge clean-out and restocking.
Post the rotation on the wall. Our breakroom and office kitchen service can set up the zones, labels and stocking system.
