Downsizing works best when you start from the new floor plan, not the old house
The usual way to downsize is to walk room by room through the current home asking what you can part with. It works, but it is slow and emotionally tiring. Starting from the destination is faster: if the new kitchen has twelve cabinets instead of twenty, the question becomes which twelve cabinets of things you want.
We measure or review the new home's closets, cabinets and rooms, then help you choose the furniture and belongings that fit. That turns a vague goal into a clear target before anything is packed.
Typical Las Vegas downsizing moves and what they involve
Every downsize is different, but a few patterns show up often in the valley, and each has its own sticking points.
| Move | What usually needs the most attention |
|---|---|
| Two-story family home to a single-story home | Kids' rooms, keepsakes, a second living area's furniture |
| House to a condo or high-rise | Garage contents, tools, holiday decor, outdoor furniture |
| Large home to a 55+ community home | Formal dining and guest rooms, entertaining pieces, hobby gear |
| Home to a casita or next-gen suite with family | Kitchen duplicates, furniture, deciding what stays shared |
Letting things go without pressure
We never decide for you what stays or goes. Our job is to bring items out, group them so you can see what you have, and keep the decisions moving. Many people find it easier to choose the best three serving platters out of nine than to decide on each one alone.
For items leaving the house, options include selling, giving to family, or donating. Well-known donation choices in the valley include Opportunity Village, Goodwill of Southern Nevada, The Shade Tree and the Habitat for Humanity Las Vegas ReStore for furniture and building items. When a downsizing session wraps up, up to a carload of your donations can ride away with us, and we can line up junk removal for whatever is left. Our guide on how to sell unwanted items in Las Vegas covers the selling side.

Packing only what is going, and unpacking it well
Once decisions are made, we pack the keep items room by room and label each box for its room in the new home. Things going to family or donation stay separate, so nothing ends up on the truck by accident. Details on our labeling are on the packing services page.
After your movers deliver, we unpack and organize. Smaller homes reward good systems: drawer dividers, shelf risers and under-bed storage make the most of every inch. We source what the plan calls for and handle returns of unused products.
Timing and cost for a downsizing project
Downsizing almost always takes longer than people expect, because the sorting stage involves so many decisions. Starting six to eight weeks before your move is comfortable for a large home; shorter timelines are possible with more sessions or a bigger team.
A downsizing session starts around $600 for the four-hour minimum. Full decluttering days are priced based on project scope, while a typical full day of packing or unpacking starts around $1,800, and most downsizing projects use several sessions across sorting, packing and unpacking. We recommend a plan after a free consultation, and our guide to downsizing before a move helps if you want to get started on your own.
