Cabinets are for things that dust, sun or curious kids should not reach
Closed cabinets are your most protected garage storage, so reserve them for categories that suffer on open shelving. In the Las Vegas Valley that means anything fine desert dust coats quickly: spare linens for the casita, pet supplies, small tools with moving parts, and car-care products you want to grab clean.
Bulky, rugged items such as coolers, storage totes and lawn bags rarely need a door. Moving them to open shelving or overhead racks frees cabinet space for the things that benefit from it. If your garage has more cabinets than you can fill sensibly, that is a sign to pull some categories back into the house rather than stuffing every shelf.
Assign one category per cabinet before you buy a single bin
A cabinet with one clear job stays organized far longer than one that holds a little of everything. Write your categories on sticky notes and place them on the cabinet doors before you load anything back in, then step back and ask whether each one sits near where it is used.
Automotive supplies belong closest to the car bay, gardening near the side door that leads to the yard, and household overflow such as paper towels nearest the door into the house. A three-car or tandem garage gives you room to create true zones, and our guide to garage zones walks through how to map them.
| Shelf height | What goes there | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Floor and bottom shelf | Heavy jugs, bags of soil, buckets | Safer to lift, no falling hazard |
| Waist to shoulder | Weekly-use items, car care, batteries | Reachable without a step stool |
| Top shelf | Seasonal and backup stock | Out of the way, still visible |
Step by step
- Empty every cabinet
Pull everything onto a tarp or folding table, grouping like with like as you go. Wipe the shelves, since desert dust settles even behind doors.
- Edit hard
Toss dried paint, empty cans and duplicates. Set aside anything heat-sensitive to move indoors.
- Map categories to cabinets
Give each cabinet one job based on where in the garage that category gets used.
- Load by weight and frequency
Heavy and bulky low, daily-use at chest height, backup stock on top.
- Bin and label
Contain small items in labeled bins with the label facing out, then close the doors and check that nothing blocks them.
Heat decides what can stay in a Las Vegas garage cabinet at all
A cabinet door blocks dust, but it does not cool anything. Summer garages here often run well past the outdoor temperature, which is why candles, wine, photos, electronics, makeup and pantry food should live inside the house no matter how neat the cabinet looks.
Paint, adhesives and some cleaning chemicals are also sensitive to extreme heat, so read labels and keep only what the manufacturer allows in hot storage. The full list is in our page on what not to store in a Las Vegas garage, and it is worth reading before you load a single shelf.

Contain small things so the door never becomes an avalanche
Loose items on a cabinet shelf slide forward, collect dust and get buried. Lidded, clear bins or shallow open bins let you see contents while keeping categories separate, and they pull out like drawers on deep shelves.
Label the bin fronts, not the lids, so you can read them with the door half open. Door-mounted racks are useful for spray bottles and gloves, but check that they clear the shelves when the door closes.
- Shallow bins for sandpaper, picture hooks and hardware
- Tall bins for spray bottles and car-care liquids
- A labeled battery and bulb bin on the middle shelf
- A small caddy for the products you carry to the car
Plan your cabinet work for the cooler months
Garage projects in Southern Nevada go best between mid-October and April, when you can spend a full afternoon in the space without the heat wearing you down. That is also when Sorted Spaces schedules garage organizing, and those weeks fill up, so plan early if you want help.
If the cabinets are only one piece of a larger garage reset, a professional team can sort, edit, label and source the bins in a day or two. You can see what that looks like on our garage organization service page.
